Power Lunch has kicked off the 2009-10 program year and - as always - it is so exciting to watch new reading pairs meet and returning pairs reunite!
For the first week, students and volunteers did a "getting to know you" activity where they talked about their favorite colors - my favorite response was, "blue, because my middle name is sky". They also talked about what they like to read about. Although it takes some children time to warm up, there were also some instant friendships formed.
I want to share an email that I received from a new volunteer after he returned to the office from starting the program:
It's true... both teachers and students are always eager for us to be able to match more students with reading mentors. You can help - call us if you would like to set up an information session at your workplace to find out how to get involved as readers. Everybody Wins! South Florida needs your support. One Power Lunch student got six new pets!
Power
Lunch is a lunchtime literacy and and mentoring program which takes
volunteers into elementary schools and matches them one-on-one with second
and third grade students. The volunteers then read aloud with their
students once each week.
