Everybody Wins!

South Florida

The theme for National Volunteer Week, commemorated April 19-25, is "Celebrating People in Action." This theme captures the meaning behind this signature week - honoring the individuals who dedicate themselves to taking action and solving problems in their communities.

This entire newsletter is filled with great information about volunteerism and reading aloud, the two components that make Everybody Wins! South Florida's Power Lunch program so unique and successful.

During National Volunteer Week - and always - Everybody Wins! South Florida celebrates our volunteer reading mentors. Power Lunch could not

happen without you!

Power Lunch is a lunchtime literacy and and mentoring program which which takes volunteers into elementary schools and matches them one-on-one with second and third grade students. The volunteers then read aloud with their students once each week.

On Wednesday, President Obama signed The Edward M. Kennedy Serve America Act.  The national service bill dramatically increases the size of the AmeriCorps service program over the next eight years, expands ways for students to earn money for college, and creates opportunities for all Americans to serve in the communities. The bill was sponsored by Senators Orrin Hatch (R-UT) and Edward Kennedy (D-MA).

Highlighting how both men lead by example and actively serve their communities, the President even cited Kennedy's invovlement with Everybody Wins! DC as a Power Lunch reading mentor. "For even in the midst of his epic fights on the floor of the Senate to enact sweeping change, he's made a quiet trek to a school not far from the Capitol, week after week, year after year, without cameras or fanfare, to sit down and read with one solitary child."

Obama went on to encourage all Americans to volunteer.  "We need your service right now, at this moment in history. I'm not going to tell you what your role should be; that's for you to discover. But I'm asking you to stand up and play your part. I'm asking you to help change history's course, put your shoulder up against the wheel. And if you do, I promise you your life will be richer, our country will be stronger, and someday, years from now, you may remember it as the moment when your own story and the American story converged, when they came together, and we met the challenges of our new century."
