The power of Power Lunch Coming in, I expected just a reading program that was one-on-one. The kids and adults would read, but I didn’t expect an impact beyond that. Much to my surprise, the actual experience has been so much more. It is rewarding not just for the students and volunteers, but for me too. When the kids see me, they start smiling and are excited to find out if it is their day to read. It is a lot of fun to select books for the children to choose from, matching both their interests as well as what is going on at school that week. For example, last week was both earth week and career week so we read a lot about recycling, police officers, water, and astronauts. It is even more exciting to see how the relationships between students and mentors have developed. After just three weeks, a teacher of one of the Power Lunch students commented to me on what an improvement she has observed in his social interactions and enthusiasm about reading. Each week, I see the students open up even more as they really connect with their reading buddies. Thank you, Miriam Taleno Miriam Taleno Power Lunch School Coordinator |
