Introductions All Around! In October I introduced you to EVERYBODY WINS! South Florida and our Power Lunch program. This week I had the honor of introducing our first group of Power Lunch reading mentors to their students. We paired second grade students at Ludlam Elementary with volunteers who go to the school and read aloud to them once a week during lunch. During the first Power Lunch session, pairs did a Getting to Know You activity - no singing required - and then decorated the folders where they will keep track of the books they read. Months of planning paid off, and it was so rewarding to see the kids and adults connect and get excited about reading. This is a huge milestone for EVERYBODY WINS! South Florida, and the event was filled with smiles. This is just the first step though and we are already recruiting corporate partners to join Power Lunch in the Fall. Power
Lunch is a lunchtime literacy and mentoring program proven to improve
reading skills and attitudes. Volunteers are paired with elementary
school students and devote one lunch hour a week to the program. Reading
pairs choose books and read together, then chat about what they have read.
