When it comes time to write the memoir, oh, the tales your
library card could tell:
Age 6: Amelia Bedelia. Age 10: The Baby-sitters Club.
Age 14: Lace. Age 19: Bronte, Dostoyevsky, Goethe
(mandatory Euro Lit).
But now, well, who’s got time to read?
You do. Really. And it’s time to share your inner bookworm with a
kid in need. Everybody Wins South Florida is the local chapter
of the national literacy program that pairs professionals (or anyone
with a flexible work schedule) with elementary school children for
one lunch hour per week for quality reading time.
You and your buddy choose a book, read, and discuss. No term
papers or critical theory. Just a chance to share a good story. Who
knows? In ten years, you may be listening to Suzy’s valedictorian
speech about how your oh-so enlightening discussions inspired her to
apply to Yale.
Or just to get a library card.
Either way, it’s a story for the books.
